Today, we are thrilled to officially share news on the future for Quartet and innovaTel.  The two entities have been acquired by NeuroFlow and Iris, respectively, opening an important door for the future of quality care in behavioral health. This new chapter will drive even better quality and affordability for more patients living with mental illness across the U.S., and we are excited for this next step for our customers, patients and employees.

The NeuroFlow and Iris acquisitions are a testament to the strength of the businesses we have built at Quartet, and the value we have created across the platform and within the broader behavioral health ecosystem. Both of these companies are leaders in their categories – with NeuroFlow as a core technology provider in behavioral health and Iris being a leading telepsychiatry company for health systems and community clinics. The differentiated competencies that Quartet brings in tech-enabled patient care and innovaTel brings in telepsychiatry services will only further strengthen their core offerings and better position them to transform the way behavioral healthcare is delivered.

Compelling Strategic Benefits of the Combined Organizations

  • Both Neuroflow and Iris share Quartet’s passion for a patient-centric approach to increase access to quality care for those with mental illness.
  • Quartet’s Care Connections platform will add a large network of referral options enhancing care accessibility for NeuroFlow’s customers, and our proprietary technology and analytics will complement Neuroflow’s AI-powered analytics and care coordination workflow solutions.
  • Innovatel will bring more than 165 quality providers to Iris’s team, allowing even greater impact on the customer, patients and communities that they serve.

At Quartet and innovaTel, we believe in delivering high quality, whole-person care to those with behavioral healthcare needs – wherever, whenever, and however it’s needed. This dedication to our mission will not change under these new parent organizations. When our leadership team began this process, we were laser-focused on finding organizations that aligned closely with our vision and purpose. In NeuroFlow and Iris, we found like-minded leadership teams that believe in doing the right thing – putting patients first and looking to ensure that care for mental illness is accessible and affordable. Together, our teams will help make this critical, and often overlooked, category of care within reach for everyone we serve.

And, thank you to MTS Health Partners and Gunderson Dettmer for their support with these transactions.

Finally, we want to thank the Quartet and innovaTel teams for all their efforts and hard work – both as a part of this acquisition process and in all they have done to tirelessly serve our patients and customers. You’ve shown an unwavering focus on executing with excellence, and we know that in this next chapter you will continue to deliver the high quality of care and attention that you always have.

Elevating Patient Care: Dr. O’Brien to Enhance Integrated Health Solutions at Quartet Health

Quartet Health, an industry leader in value-based behavioral healthcare services, is thrilled to announce that Michael R. O’Brien, MD, has joined the organization as Executive Medical Director of Quartet’s Whole Health program. Whole Health by Quartet is a unique, whole-person care delivery solution that features a fully-integrated physical and behavioral health model, providing wraparound care services for people with severe mental illness (SMI) at no additional cost to patients. Dr. O’Brien brings extensive experience and dedication to enhancing healthcare delivery for individuals with severe mental illnesses.

Dr. O’Brien transitions to Quartet Health from his role as Center Medical Director at InnovAge in Philadelphia, with a rich background in clinical practice and healthcare leadership. His previous positions include Senior Medical Director of Clinical Innovation at Clover Health, and Medical Officer at CareMore & Aspire Health.

Passionate about integrated care, Dr. O’Brien has spent much of his career improving services for medically and socially complex populations. His personal and professional journey has equipped him uniquely to drive forward Quartet Health’s mission of providing comprehensive, whole-person care.

Dr. O’Brien obtained his medical degree from SUNY Downstate, completed his Internal Medicine and Pediatrics Residency at the University of Buffalo, and pursued a Health Services Research Fellowship at Yale School of Medicine.

Reflecting on his new role, Dr. O’Brien said, “I’ve worked with various complex populations my whole career. I have also had challenging personal experiences helping family members with serious mental illness navigate the system. Unfortunately, the larger healthcare system too often fails people with serious mental illness and comorbid medical disease and a new approach is needed. I’m deeply inspired to join Quartet and the Whole Health team to advance and grow our new approach to whole health care for people affected by serious mental illness.”

Dr. Michael Lipp, Chief Medical Officer of Quartet Health and chief architect of the Whole Health program, also welcomed Dr. O’Brien, noting, “Dr. O’Brien’s clinical experience and passion for serving complex, underserved populations was a perfect fit for this program. His leadership will allow us to accelerate the growth of this program, and deepen our ability to deliver high quality, integrated care to our patients.”

Partnership aims to improve outcomes through increased support to underserved and at-risk patient populations through Clover’s home-based care model

FRANKLIN, Tenn., March 19, 2024 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — Today, Clover Health (“Clover” or the “Company”) announced a partnership with Quartet Health, a value-based behavioral health care enablement and delivery company, to increase the support and resources provided to Clover members with serious mental illness (SMI) through the Company’s home-based care delivery unit, Clover Home Care.

As part of this partnership, Quartet will use its expert care teams to augment Clover Home Care’s capabilities. Quartet’s clinicians will also begin using the Clover Assistant platform to deliver care to the Clover patients under its care.

Clover Home Care addresses the needs of Clover’s most complex patient cohorts by delivering in-home care access, medication support, mental and physical care coordination, as well as local community resource and transportation support. Its care teams – both in-home and virtual – are led by physicians and nurse practitioners trained in both palliative care and family medicine, along with care coordinators, social workers, medical assistants and dedicated case managers.

To augment Clover Home Care’s robust care delivery model, and address one of Clover’s highest need cohorts, the Company is tapping into the behavioral health expertise of Quartet Health’s Whole Health program to provide additional support to members suffering from SMI. The Whole Health program is a unique, whole-person care delivery solution that delivers a fully-integrated physical and behavioral health model that will take accountability for the total cost of care (TCOC) on Clover Health’s most complex members, while also providing wraparound care services for a traditionally underserved patient population.

“Patients with serious mental illness often have worse outcomes and a lower life expectancy, and they experience a fragmented healthcare system that does not adequately address their behavioral, physical, and social needs,” said Dr. Michael J. Lipp, Quartet Health’s Chief Medical Officer, and former CMO of the CMS Innovation Center. “Patients often struggle to get access to care, and the care they do receive is often uncoordinated. Layered on top of Clover Assistant’s data-driven insights, this program will provide care that is coordinated, comprehensive and convenient, at no additional cost to patients.”

“Through Clover Home Care, we are delivering impactful, proactive support to our members via a high-touch model built on top of the computing power of Clover Assistant. This allows our highly skilled and compassionate care teams to have a holistic view of each patient’s individual needs and address them accordingly,” said Brady Priest, CEO of Clover Home Care. “We’re confident that additional behavioral health support for our SMI cohort will increase the quality of life for these members, while continuing to reduce unnecessary spend.”

In addition to its care management capabilities, Clover’s proprietary technology stack is essential in driving enrollment in disease-specific programs like Whole Health by Quartet. For example, Artificial intelligence (AI) embedded in Clover Assistant will identify members at highest risk of suffering from under-treated SMI, and identify increasing risk of hospitalizations for the SMI population.

As of January 1, Clover Home Care with Whole Health by Quartet Health is available to eligible members in New Jersey for no additional cost. For Clover members interested in learning more about the program, including eligibility, visit https://www.quartethealth.com/whole-health or call 888-528-7618.

Online platform assesses member needs to match members with an appropriate provider at no cost

DETROIT, May 24, 2023 – Starting July 1, 2023, Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan and Blue Care Network will offer a new behavioral health care navigation solution to help members find the provider best suited for their mental health or substance use needs more quickly and easily. This virtual care navigation solution will be available at no additional cost to in-state, fully-insured commercial and Medicare Advantage members ages 18 or older through a partnership with Quartet Health, a leading behavioral health care technology and services company.

Members can join the Quartet platform by registering and submitting a self-referral or they can be referred by a Blue Cross or Blue Care Network care manager. Following the referral, Quartet will conduct an individual assessment to match the member with an appropriate outpatient provider based on their clinical needs and preferences including the provider’s specialty, location and availability – both in-person and virtually.

“Blue Cross recognizes the difficulty some members may face when it comes to finding and accessing mental health care, while also understanding how important these services are to our members’ quality of life,” said Dr. Amy McKenzie, vice president of Clinical Partnerships and associate chief medical officer at Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan. “We anticipate this partnership will help ease that pressure in locating a therapist or psychiatrist and obtaining a timely appointment, resulting in a better member experience through a platform that addresses their behavioral health care needs.”

Nearly 1.5 million Michigan residents suffer from a mental health condition; however, a 2022 survey found that 58% of Michigan adults reported it was difficult to find mental health providers that are affordable or covered by insurance. Blue Cross’ partnership with Quartet Health is designed to help bridge the gap in mental health care access and reduce barriers to these resources for those who need it most.

“Quartet is built upon the fundamental idea that everyone deserves high quality behavioral health care that fits their needs. The demand for whole-person behavioral health care has never been higher, and we applaud Blue Cross’ commitment to addressing the community’s needs in a new and impactful way. We look forward to working with providers across the state to improve members’ timely access to behavioral health care,” said Christina Mainelli, CEO of Quartet.

Tech-enabled care delivery model offers high-quality treatment in partnership with primary care and community resources.

NEW YORKNov. 15, 2022 – Quartet Health, a leading mental health care technology and services company, today announced the launch of its behavioral health care clinic. In light of the mental health capacity shortage seen nationwide, the clinic’s aim is to fill in care gaps and deliver speed to quality behavioral healthcare for all, especially those with moderate to severe mental illness (SMI).

Behavioral health care needs have risen sharply across the United States since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, putting clinicians under enormous pressure as demand for mental health services outpaces supply. That gap is particularly serious for high-acuity patients. Data shows that last year, more than 129 million people lived in a federally designated mental health care “professional shortage area” and throughout the pandemic 65% of mental health organizations have had to cancel, reschedule, or turn away patients.

“Patients with serious mental illness are underserved, and there is a need for more access to measurement-based, quality care. We’re excited to introduce the clinic, which will help support a patient population that often cannot find care outside of the emergency department,” said Christina Mainelli, President and Chief Operating Officer of Quartet Health. “We recognize the capacity constraints; there are simply not enough in-network clinicians to serve patients quickly. Our providers will complement existing networks to ensure all patients can get timely access to quality care.”

Treatment from the clinic is provided by a dedicated, full-time multidisciplinary care team with experience delivering high-quality, evidence-based care to complex patient populations. The care team will coordinate care with primary care and community resources for comprehensive quality care. The team is led by board-certified psychiatrists and composed of psychiatric nurse practitioners, licensed clinical social workers, nurse care managers, and patient care coordinators.

Clinic services include biopsychosocial assessments, comprehensive psychiatric evaluations, medication management, follow-up visits, and ongoing psychotherapy. In addition, nurse care managers assist patients with food, housing, job training and placement, access to medical health care, and other crucial areas that can contribute to and exacerbate mental health challenges.

“We treat the whole patient using a comprehensive approach that utilizes measurement-based care” said Dr. Michael Lipp, Quartet’s Chief Medical Officer. “High quality care requires an understanding of each patient’s needs, which includes not just their medical care but support in other areas of their lives.”

Measurement-based care focuses on whole-person outcomes, as opposed to the traditional fee-for-service model, and allows patient progress and outcomes to be tracked consistently across all clinicians and patients. Keeping patients engaged throughout their care journey is a top priority for the clinic’s providers to ensure improved quality outcomes.

The clinic launch comes at a time of significant growth for Quartet. In 2021, the company acquired innovaTel Telepsychiatry as part of its strategy to develop market-leading care delivery capabilities to complement its existing ecosystem of high-performing clinicians who practice in-network on behalf of health insurance plans.

Quartet now employs over 200 clinicians, has over 20,000 providers on its platform, and serves over half a million patients annually — a number that is expected to double in 2023. The clinic launched in July, and Quartet has plans for a significant expansion in the coming year.

“Our clinic represents a major milestone in Quartet’s commitment to improving access and speed to care,” said Dr. Sherry Dubester, the company’s Chief Clinical Strategy & Quality Officer. “But we’re not done yet. We are excited to enter new markets and share results as our clinical care population and data set grows. We’re proud of our successes so far in improving access to and quality of mental health care — and we’re just getting started.”

The two industry leaders join forces to bring quicker access, improved experience, and evidence-based care to all who need mental health care

New York, NY and Erie, PA — December 8, 2021 — Quartet Health, a tech-enabled mental health care company that works with health plans, systems, and provider groups to deliver speed to quality care for all, and InnovaTel Telepsychiatry, a provider of virtual mental healthcare with differentiated expertise in treating complex conditions, today announced their decision to partner to help millions of people nationwide get speed to quality mental health care. The acquisition of InnovaTel is Quartet’s next step to advance its new strategic direction that was announced last week.

Both companies were founded in 2014 and share a mission to help people quickly and seamlessly obtain quality mental health care during times of need. Through this acquisition, Quartet will develop market-leading care delivery capabilities to complement its existing ecosystem of high-performing clinicians who practice in-network on behalf of health insurance plans. InnovaTel will also expand its reach to serve members of health plans and systems nationwide through this partnership. Over time, the two companies will expand their virtual care delivery capabilities, with an initial focus on providing timely and high-quality access to care for those with a serious mental illness.

To date more than 300,000 people across the country – across Medicaid, Medicare Advantage, and commercial insurance – have come to Quartet to access quality care. In addition to care navigation teams that provide high-touch, white-glove support to patients who want it, Quartet’s sophisticated data and analytics enable its SmartMatch technology to seamlessly route patients to the care that’s most appropriate for them, including in-network mental health care professionals nationwide. The deep focus on supporting and enabling mental health clinicians — including those on staff with InnovaTel — will allow Quartet to improve speed and quality for patients across conditions. As a result of the acquisition, Quartet will scale to more than 30 states by the end of 2022.

“At Quartet, during this time of increased demand, we’ve seen first hand the limitations of the system’s current capacity,” said Puneet Singh, CEO of Quartet Health. “Data shows that 65% of mental health organizations have had to cancel, reschedule, or turn away patients during the pandemic. By coming together with InnovaTel, we believe we can successfully meet this increased demand with a focus on speed to quality care for all.”

As one of the nation’s leaders in virtual psychiatric care delivery, InnovaTel has 130 clinicians on staff, 51% of whom are prescribers and 27% of whom are clinicians of color. The company’s model of working with community mental health centers to get patients in-network mental health care has improved the capacity to treat patients with mental health needs by anywhere from 5x to 10x. More than 50% of patients who InnovaTel serves have a serious mental illness.

“As a longtime clinician and provider of care, I know first-hand the systemic challenges that people face everyday across our country when they need to quickly access mental health care,” said Jonathan Evans, clinical psychologist and InnovaTel’s President and CEO. “We are thrilled to come together with Quartet Health to build a comprehensive, nationwide solution to help all people – across insurance types and clinical needs – obtain timely access to high-quality care. Quartet’s sophisticated data and analytics, and technology infrastructure, will provide the framework for InnovaTel to scale quickly to communities nationwide, with a continued focus on those with the most complex needs.”

Unique to their shared approach is the focus on connecting all people to “quality care,” as measured by Quartet’s platform and defined across four areas:

  • Speed to care in hours and days, not weeks or months
  • A seamless patient and clinician experience
  • Improved health outcomes
  • Lower cost of care for patients and payers

Over time, the companies will leverage these four measurement domains to develop actionable insights about the quality of care mental health clinicians deliver, and then reward high-performing clinicians through value-based payment arrangements.
